Reading And Our Children
By Pamala Childress
I have always loved books and reading. In the books I read I was able to travel anywhere in the world. I experienced so many amazing adventures while in my bedroom with a flashlight and a good book. As a teacher I always read a book to my class. It amazed me how enthralled my students were with the stories I chose. I have to admit I was also a bit of a ham. I loved changing the pitch, tone and volume of my voice. Better to highlight bits of the story and add suspense and drama to the telling. Year after year it became obvious that the students that read well also excelled in the majority of their classes. Today we all lead such busy lives that the art of reading to our children is almost lost in the numerous demands on our time. Can't we all find at least 20 minutes to curl up with our children and read? Reading is such an integral part of learning and life. As a retired teacher I believe that the more children read the better. Comic books, trading cards, computer games, joke books, magic tricks are just a few of the topics that some of our children can enjoy. My favorite time of the day for reading to my children was at bedtime. With 2 boys we would take turns choosing the story and of course we shared the reading. Whenever I cooked I always had a lot of willing little hands. How they loved to break the eggs and use the hand beater. This was a great opportunity for them to read the recipe cards and measure the ingredients. Did we have spills and a mess? Sometimes we did. But we also had a lot of fun and today my sons are both great cooks. So many of us tell our children that reading is important in school. But if we don't find time outside of school for reading with our children, how will they know we really mean it. |
