A Mom & Grandmother Falls in Love with Facebook
By Pamala Childress
Growing up in IL I was busy swimming, going to school and spending time with my friends. I guess I took my family for granted. Don't get me wrong, I love my family and would really do anything for them. Yet I guess I just always thought their was lots of time and they would always be there, Well you know the story. Time passed and so did my grandparents and parent, aunts, uncles, and cousins. My father was a southern boy who met my Mom after WWII. She was a Yankee from Il and he was from AR. What a difference when we visited my Dad's family. The food tasted different and they ate some strange looking vegetables.....fried okra, black eyed peas and collard greens just to name a few. Before too long I was saying y'all like a native. Of course whenever I returned to IL my friends would laugh . That was fine with me. I liked being part rebel. Growing up with a large, fun loving family was such a treat. I was busy enjoying life and had a ball. After college, I too married a southern boy. We spent 20 years traveling in the United States and Europe as a military family. You guessed it. Bob was in the Air Force. What an adventure that was. Once again time and distance kept me from really connecting with my family. I always thought I would have time someday. Of course someday just never came. Now we come to today. I realize that I know almost nothing about my Dad's family or where they originated from. I joined Facebook on a whim. Friends of mine are on and kept telling me to get with it! Well I thought it might be fun. WOW, it is just a treat. Oh yes, I'm in love with Facebook. It is so much more than hugs and pokes. It is where I found my family. Shortly after signing up I started looking for "Scriber's". My maiden name and of course my Dad's last name. The rest is pure joy. I found my cousins, nieces, and a whole lot of family. The really neat thing is that one of my found relatives sent me genealogy about my ancestors. I learned things that I never would have known. I have a great, great, great, great grandfather that was a Patriot during the Revolutionary War. His wife and children were captured by Indians. He owned land in what is now, New York. Oh, Donald just think, it might have been Scriber Tower. I learned much more about the family that I was too young to appreciate many years ago. Best of all, my adventure is just beginning. Hope yours is too. |
